This is the first time I try to write an article in English on my blog.
Gnome3 released on Apr 6, 2011.
Before it came to release, I had tried two times to install it on my Gentoo.
The first time, after I had dealt with many missing keywords of some packages, one important package, the xulrunner-2 was not in any overlay.So I gave up.
The second time, with the help of a bash script, I successfully installed a beta version of Gnome3. However, when I tried to update that desktop environment, it became not available the next time.
In order to install Gnome 3 on Gentoo, first of all, change the arch to ~x86( on my computer ) in /etc/make.conf . Then, add the gnome overlay layman -a gnome. The next step is unmask some packages related to Gnome3 in /var/lib/layman/gnome/profiles/package.mask and /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask.
update on Aug 19th: It seems that Gnome 3 is in portage now. So just copy all the gnome3-related lines in /usr/portage/profiles/portage.mask to /etc/portage/package.unmask.
Then, update the world, you may find a lot of updates and lots of masked packages.
During the emerge time, the old Gnome desktop environment may crash, so do this update in other environment, such as KDE, or in ttyX. I don't know why the network between me and the official gnome ftp is so bad, I have to use my VPN to update Gnome3 every time.
The next is some tips:
1. ibus in Gnome3 must enable the gtk3 USE in order to be used in gnome-terminal.
2. the theme and many other visual elements can change by tweak-tools.
3. Gentoo will support Gonme3.2 on Sep 2011, but until now, the version of Gnome3 is still 3.0.2.
4. ctrl + alt + ↑ and ↓ is very useful when you put many windows in different desktop
5. some programs stay in the status bar, when you may not easily to right click to quit, use the ↑ and ↓
At last, the main purpose of this article is to reactive my English writing for the coming CET-6 examination.
